Spectra of the Beautiful Past Exhibition in Kalba
The historic Bait Sheikh Saeed bin Hamad Al Qasimi in Kalba, Sharjah is currently hosting the Spectra of the Beautiful Past exhibition with artworks that highlight Emirati cultural and heritage. Featuring selected works of Emirati artists Abdul Raheem Salim and Najat Makki, the exhibition supports intergenerational dialogue through rich creative experiences.
The exhibition was inaugurated by Sheikh Haitham bin Saqr Al Qasimi, deputy chairman of the Ruler’s office in Kalba in the presence of Maissa Saif Alsuwaidi, director of Sharjah Museums Authority. Revisiting themes of memory, history and identity through distinct yet interconnected artistic approaches, the artists have presented a compelling narrative that celebrates familial bonds, the central role of women in society and the enduring resilience of Emirati traditions.
While Salim’s paintings capture the beauty of community life and family ties Makki reimagines the role of Emirati women, their everyday rituals and the rhythm of local life. Through these displayed artworks viewers can experience the lived-in past in a new visual and contemporary framework further strengthening their connection to their roots.
The Bait Sheikh Saeed bin Hamad Al Qasimi is an iconic heritage house on the east coast of the Arabian Gulf built between 1899 and 1901. It was built by the ruler of Kalba, Saeed bin Hamad Al Qasimi, and is today a cultural museum.
The opening ceremony had commenced with the traditional Emirati performance that was inspired by a century-old tree in the courtyard of the house. The exhibition that runs until May 31, 2026 will also host several interactive events including a community programme ‘Fuwala of Bait Sheikh Saeed bin Hamad Al Qasimi’ on December 22, 2025 featuring Makki in a women-only session.
