To commemorate the 30th anniversary of Uzbekistan’s Independence Day on September 1, 2021, the Andakulova Gallery in DIFC, Dubai, has unveiled the ‘Infinite Stories of Great Minds’ exhibition. The virtual access link here (https://www.andakulova.com/virtual-tours) and onsite exhibition features artworks of two of Usbekistan’s prolific artists—Bakhodir Jalal and Javlon Umarbekov. Both Jalal and Umarbekov have contributed immensely to the reinvigoration of art and culture in the country.

At the heart of the ancient, Silk Road, Uzbekistan is home to historical monuments, desert citadels, bustling bazaars and unique art forms. The artists on their part, have combined international influence and national flavours to showcase Uzbek life and culture in bright hues.

Life Circle by Bakhodir Jalal

Jalal, whose career has spanned over 50 years is credited with the reviving of the mural genre with his frescoes displayed across theatres and state institutions in Uzbekistan and Europe. A master painter and nationally acclaimed graphic artist, Jalal, is considered a living legend. His work in the exhibition pans many genres—from abstract to figurative.  At 73, he is now converting some of his paintings into digital art and a few in the NFT (non-fungible token) format.

Umarbekov, yet another key contemporary, Uzbek artist, is a true modernist,  who through his art has interpreted Uzbek heritage. He is equally influenced by Eastern and Western art. His paintings, he says, are inspired from his childhood intertwined with the collective memories of the native residents.
