From October 28th to November 6th, 2021, the Emirate of Ajman is gearing up to showcase a slice of local history and artistic excellence at the Al Murabbaa Arts Festival. Under the theme ‘Inspired by Yesterday to Imagine Tomorrow’ the festival is slated to take place in the Ajman Heritage District surrounding the Ajman Museum. Besides exhibiting art made by local and international artists, the fest will also include workshops on art history and design along with fashion shows, concerts, readings and live art installations.
Some of the participating artists include award-winning resin artist Mahnaz Karimi, photographer Mireia Vilaplana, sculptor Abeer Mohammed, artist Ayat Al Salmi and visual artist Afshan Quraishi.
By naming the festival Al Murabbaa, the event authorities wanted to pay homage to one of the most important tourist attractions located in Ajman Corniche — the Al Murabbaa watchtower. Built as a fort in the 1930s by Sheikh Rashid bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, the ruler of Ajman (1928-1981) it served as a watch tower and a landmark for travellers entering Ajman from the south west side of the Emirate. Due to its historical significance, His Highness Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ajman, ordered the restoration of Al Murabbaa Fort to be preserved as an important historical monument.

“This festival aims to shed light on the historical, cultural and touristic importance of the Al Murabbaa Fort, especially since it is considered as an ideal destination for visitors looking into delve into UAE’s developmental and progressive movement which has become the world’s centre of attention and a touristic model that Ajman counts on, for its vision in developing the tourism sector in the future,” says Saud Aljasmi, Head of Events at Ajman Department of Tourism Development. He added that the festival attempts to links the past and the present and is considered an ideal approach to reinforce the value of heritage in the minds of the younger generation.
