An Odyssey of Identity at Firetti Contemporary
A group exhibition by six African artists is currently on display at Firetti Contemporary, Al Serkal Avenue, Dubai. An Odyssey of identity portrays the intricate and multifaceted nature of human beings. In a series of striking portraits, the artists have exploded the ever-evolving construct of individuality. Running till the end of August, the exhibition features works of Boris Anje, Collin Sekajugo, Kansiime Brian Lister, Christine Nyatho, Florence Nanteza and Carson Buka.
This display invites viewers to explore the unique perspectives of these artists on the concept of identity while encouraging critical examination of the multidisciplinary nature of their African heritage even as each artist brings forth their own distinct vision.
Lister’s oil on acrylic uses colour and symbolism to capture the raw emotions of African men and women. There is a sentiment of understanding and bonding in his paintings that represent modern Africans normalizing luxury and celebrating the progress they have made.

Buka’s portraits, made on traditional Bark cloth from Masaka with white canvas blends tradition and modernity. His paintings celebrate the diverse nature of his subjects, reminding viewers that identity is never singular.

Anje’s art challenges stereotypes and presents a vision of identity that is inclusive. His canvas showcases uber-stylish African youth in outfits with traditional Adinkra symbols used in Ghana and the Ivory Coast.

Sekajugo’s mixed-media work take on multiple cultural sources to create images that also engage recyclable materials, the likes of polypropylene bags, denim fabrics and waste paper.
While Nyatho’s fascination with the moon and its symbolism, highlight how culture and beliefs shape our identity, Nanteza’s art focuses on the healing properties of plants and herbs.
The exhibition is curated by Celine Azam, Director of the gallery. More details on: https://www.firetticontemporary.com/
